Im August erschienen beide Mädchen plötzlich wegen zweier Mordfälle vor Gericht. Then on May 25, the day before she turned 11, Mary Bell strangled four-year-old Martin Brown to death in an abandoned house in Scotswood, England.
Police were mystified. There was, however, an empty bottle of painkillers on the floor near the body. In the absence of better information, they assumed Martin Brown had swallowed the pills.
His death was ruled an accident. His mother gently explained to her that Martin was dead, but Mary said she already knew that; she wanted to see his body in the coffin.
Police assumed the notes were a morbid prank. For the nursery school, this was just the latest and most disturbing in a series of break-ins; they wearily installed an alarm system.
It was a smart choice, because it caught Mary and Norma at the scene of the crime several nights later — but as they were simply loitering outside when the police arrived, they were let off the hook.
In the meantime, Mary was telling her fellow classmates that she had killed Martin Brown. Bell says that her mother's bouts of abuse were followed by displays of affection.
She was given sweets and chips and felt loved by her mother. Ms Sereny, whose book is titled 'Cries Unheard', tells The Times thart she was so sceptical about the details of Bell's claims that she asked for them to be repeated three times.
Ms Sereny also says that it was Betty Bell's death three years ago that unlocked Mary Bell's silence. One small girl complained to a teacher about how Mary had stubbed a cigarette out on her cheek.
Despite knowing about her violence, the school failed to address the issue. Mary was conditioned by her dysfunctional surroundings from an early age.
Her mother would allow men to abuse Mary from the age of just four [5] , and due to the lack of space at home, Mary was exposed to what went on between Betty and her clients which, it was claimed, also involved sadomasochism.
All that alongside the sexual violence she witnessed between others became the norm in her young mind. Norma Joyce Bell no relation to Mary lived next door.
She was two years older but less intelligent. Norma followed Mary and was easily led by her, and together they became a pair that other children would avoid through fear.
The slums of Scotswood were gradually being demolished in an attempt to regenerate the area. On Saturday 11th May , Mary and Norma took a three year old boy to buy some sweets.
Later that day he was found wandering in the street, dazed and bleeding. Although the police became involved, no further action was taken. On Sunday 12th May , a local mother complained to police that Mary had attempted to strangle her daughter, Pauline, in a sandpit.
Pauline told how Norma had pinned her down and Mary had grabbed her around her throat. Pauline was able to get free and run home.
Again, police took no further action. On Saturday 25th May, four year old Martin had been playing with his friends in the local derelict houses.
When she reached the derelict house, there was a group of people stood outside and a crying man was holding Martin in his arms.
Martin was pronounced dead on arrival at Newcastle hospital. Martin had been found dead in an upstairs room of the house and police were called in to investigate.
The pathologist was unable to reach a conclusion on his death. On Monday 27th May, police attended a call to a break-in at a local nursery, where they found four pieces of paper.
There were a crowd of people at an old house. Other family members would tell Sereny that in the early years of her life, Betty would try to kill Mary, trying to make it look like an accident.
Marrying Betty after Mary was born; Billy Bell is a lifelong criminal who Mary thought may have been her father. Police would later tell of being chased off by a violent Billy who threatens to set the dog on them when they call to interview Mary.
