The Porta Nova apartments were acquired in 1998, and were then extensively renovated so as to take full advantage of their very special location. In the past two years some 700 persons of all ages and from all over the world have stayed here throughout the year. Quite a few have already booked again for a second or third time.

Porta Nova itself is one of the oldest streets in Blanes, and the name ('New Gate') refers to an entrance to the medieval palace-castle, now a church. The street runs from the sea front to what was once the castle rampart. Blanes has three beaches, all officially rated either four or five stars, and the nearest is only two minutes' walk away. No. 27 is effectively in a cul-de-sac of Carrer Unio, itself a quiet street that narrows at one end to about six feet, so cars can't get through. The nearest shop, a Spar grocery, is only 30 yards away, and just around the corner from there is the main shopping area, with groceries, newsagents, boutiques, markets, banks cafes and restaurants. So you have the best of all worlds: no hills to climb, the beach temptingly close, central yet relatively quiet.

The apartments are arranged on four storeys. The ground floor has a studio, and on each of the three upper floors there is a three-bedroom apartment, each with its own front doors and sharing the same street entrance. Also on the ground floor, but with its own entrance in the next street, GIRBAU, is a one-bedroom apartment. The building is about 30 years old, and has been beautifully modernised by the same team that restored Villa Cooper in 1997. Beautiful tilework, new bathrooms and kitchens reflect a degree of style, safety and efficiency that is rare in Mediterranean holiday accommodation.

The sleeping arrangements consist of a double bedroom, with twin beds or a double, and a single bedroom overlooking Girbau, and an inside bedroom with two full sized bunk beds. There is also a double sofa bed in each sitting room. Beds and mattresses are new, as is all the furniture and equipment in the apartments.

The sitting/dining rooms are quite spacious and airy with a small balcony with window boxes overlooking Porta Nova street, and a ceiling fan. The kitchens are small but handy, and provide everything holidaymakers are likely to want, with a ceramic hob and electric fan oven, a microwave, generous refrigerator, and plenty of utensils, crockery and glassware. Villa Cooper policy is to provide anything tenants may reasonably want, so whether it's a wok or a steamer, a pressure cooker, cocktail shaker or sangria jug, if it's not there just ask. (There may be a small hire charge for some items to cover admin and depreciation). The bathrooms are small but attractive, with shower (screen doors), basin and WC, good lighting and an infra-red heater. There's sufficient cupboard and wardrobe space for holiday needs. A cot, a buggy and high-chair can be pre-booked. Satellite television (EuroStar, which includes BBC World and CNN), Music Centres (radio cassettes, CD's), and Videos can also be re-booked. The TV sets are stereo, which means foreign films shown on Spain's terrestrial programmes can be watched in their original language, usually English. The first-floor apartment is reserved for non-smokers.
The ground-floor studio is open-plan, with a small dining table and wardrobe, and has a separate shower-room with basin and WC, and overhead infra-red heater. The comfortable double sofa bed provides more daytime living space. The kitchen and bathroom are similar to that of the apartments, and equipped to the same standard. The studio is not suitable for more than two persons, perhaps with an infant or young child.

The ground-floor apartment, with entrance at 28 Girbau Street, has a shower-room with basin and WC, and a separate bedroom with double bed. There is also a double sofa bed in the living room, so it is suitable for up to four persons. The specification is the same as for the apartments.

All four Porta Nova Apartments and the Studio provide year-round comfort, with ceiling fans, electric radiators, and overhead bathroom heaters. Additional space heaters and free-standing fans can also be requested.
A particularly attractive feature of the building is the large roof terrace, with lovely views of the hilltop castle and chapel, the nearby church, once a castle, and you can just glimpse the sea. This terrace has been beautifully tiled, with two pretty Italian mosaic insets. It consists of two open parts; one facing inland, the other south facing. Both can be used for sunbathing and al fresco meals. Between these is a covered area with brick-built barbecue, a gas cooker, a small basin, and facilities for preparing food, and shade for those who prefer it. There's also a washing machine for tenants' use, retractable washing lines, and some terrace furniture, including sun-loungers. The attractive roof garden features a range of colourful sub-tropical flowering shrubs.

The rental includes the provision of bed linen, bath towels, bath mats and hand towels. Beach towels can be ordered in advance for a small charge. Electricity and water are charged roughly at UK prices (see Booking Conditions).

All Villa Cooper tenants, including those in Porta Nova, are able to enjoy free use of the large swimming pool at the Europa Apartments, about half a mile away. Local staff will provide a letter of introduction.
